Shopify Review

The Bottom Line: Best for large companies and drop shipping businesses

Shopify is one of the best online store builders out there. It has arguably the most comprehensive feature set of any hosted e-commerce platform, and it’s a particularly good solution for dropshipping, point of sale, and multi-currency sales.
In terms of drawbacks, accessing key features often means adding apps, which can add up to a monthly fee; the platform comes bundled with only a few free themes; the drag-and-drop editor lets you edit templates, but not individual pages, which could be done better.
But all in all, Shopify is one of the best solutions for setting up an online store.

Cons
  • Transaction fees: Shopify charges transaction fees on all sales made through third-party payment providers, which can add up and cut into profits.
  • Pricing: Shopify's pricing can be higher than some other e-commerce platforms, particularly for businesses with a high volume of sales or needing more advanced features.
  • Limited free themes: While Shopify offers a range of customizable templates and themes, its selection of free themes is more limited.
  • App costs: While many of the Shopify apps are free or low-cost, some more advanced apps can be expensive and add significant costs to a business's monthly budget.

How does Shopify work?

Shopify is a “hosted” solution, which means that it runs on its own server and you don’t need to buy web hosting or install any software to use it. You can build and manage your Shopify store in your web browser – so you can run your Shopify business from anywhere, as long as you have access to the Internet.

The “big idea” of the platform is to provide you with the key things you need to set up and market your online store “out of the box” – templates, payment processors, blogs and email marketing tools are included in most Shopify plans.

That said, you can customize a Shopify store more extensively by adding apps or using custom code.

Finally, you don’t own a copy of Shopify, but pay a monthly fee to use it.
